Show THE FOLLOWI NG I S AN INTERVIEW WITH WILLIAM EVERETT HALDANE, MINING ENGINEER. THE INTERVIEWER IS CLARE ENGLE. THE DATE IS AUGUST 4, 1970. THE SUBJECT IS THE URANIUM INDUSTRY AND THE UNION CARBI DE CORPORATION. [TAPE #1. GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO.] CE: Thank you very much, Mr. and Mrs. Hal da ne for inviting me into your home. I appreciate very much the opportunity to talk with both of you. I'm sur e that this will be a very enlightening experience f or me since you've both been working in the uranium industry for many years. Before I begin discussing your particular role in industry, however, would you tell me please, Mr. Haldane, where you were born and where you were raised and educated? WH: I was born and raised in Denver, attended East Denver High School. I attended Purdue University for three years and then transferred to Colorado School of Mines and received an engineer of mines degree in spring of 1942. That's about the extent of my education. CE: Then what did you do before you got your degree? WH: Well, I 'd been out of school for a couple of years and worked down in Uravan area in the, from 1936 to the time I graduated, and along with John Hill, I was one of the two engineers hired for the Metal Reserve program for the vanadium war effort in the early par t of the war. CE: You were hired by Uni on Carbide, USV? |
