Show "SOX" KITASHIMA SK: But it became very frightening. On the day we heard about Pearl Harbor, my mother, my sister and I were in a car, and suddenly on the car radio we heard about it. We just gasped. My mother said, "Oh, this is terrible." I guess, she started thinking what was going to happen to her because she is an alien. Everyday, we lived in fear, not knowing what was going to happen to us until they started to post signs on the telephone poles telling us we have to evacuate. We had some families approach us and asked us if we would join them in going into farming in Colorado or Utah on a voluntary basis, but not knowing our future, my brother did not want to take that risk. ST: Yeah, you never know. SK: Of course, I thought that we would be coming home by Christmas. I do not know what made me think that. I took it very lightly. We were sent to Tanforan. Living in a horse stall was the grim period of my life. ST: Yeah, were you in one of the horse stalls? SK: I was in a horse stall. Right above our stall was a guard. You know, I never knew too much about Tanforan. I knew it was a race track, but I did not know what it was really like until I got there. And 6 |
