Show LEE SUYEMOTO events which occurred other than the living quarters, the food situ tion and that type of thing you'll have to a k those who were older at that time. But I do remember travelling from Tanforan to Topaz on a troop train. We were placed on a troop train, standing all the way across-- ST: You stood?! LS: I remember standing. On our recent visit back to Topaz, Jane showed us where the railway station was, and I really can't even remember that. I do remember getting in a truck to be transported into camp. But I really don't remember the railway station where we all disembarked. I do remember standing on the train and it was a long, very slow, trip. The first things I remember of Topaz were the barracks, no trees and the alkali dust. If someone were to ask me, "What do you remember of Topaz?" my immediate reply would be the dust storms and being unable to see more than an arms length away. Topaz, was the first place where I saw snow. I'd never seen snow before, in California. Again, in Topaz, the important thing as far as we were concerned, was going back to school. This is being retrospective, but I think on the faculty there were two or three good teachers. Many of the faculty were probably those who couldn't get good teaching 9 |
