Show RN T A. M TTENET J 22 2004 an xperience I reflect back on fondly. I went on to get my d gr in ci il and ch m.i al eng1neenng. I had occasion to work one summer. I applied for jobs posted at Dupont ompany and Hercules in my junior year of college. Hercules said, "We'd like to have you come on." This was the summer of 1946. I did get an offer from Dupont, but I didn't want to work for the paint company so I decided to go with Hercules. I ended up in the drawing room as a draftsman and errand boy. A week after I hired on, they had a very bad explosion in Kenvil, New Jersey, at a nitroglycerine plant. They lost two or three lives. They needed somebody to help restoration of the area because they were making a lot of money with nitroglycerine at that time. So I ended up my summer working in Kenvil. I'll never forget. This is really the reason I cast my lot with Hercules. We were out there. It wasT-shirt weather, no shirt weather, and we were surveying. We were getting ready to reestablish some of the things that had been destroyed. The chief engineer was there on the site this one day. I was out there, of course, in suntans, surveyor boots and no shirt. I was getting a little sun. Here came Ray Wheelock. He was big. He was a big guy, a big man with the job he had. He was kind of walking towards me. I peeked up from the end of the surveyor's transit. I thought, "I'm going to get my tail chewed out." I had no shirt. He said, "Mettenet, we're a little surprised at the contribution you're making. I'd like to tell you that as of the first of the month, last month"-you started off at 195 dollars a month" we're going to give you the starting rate of incoming engineers of 295 dollars a month." I thought, "This is my company." 28 |
