| Abstract |
Brady was born on 9 June 1922 in Bingham, Utah. He recalls his childhood, family, and the Depression. Following high school, he took an aircraft mechanics course offered at Hill Air Base and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943. After flight training he trained in B-24s and formed a crew in Boise, Idaho. Assigned to the 406th Bombardment Squadron of the 8th Air Force, 1st Air Division, he dropped propaganda leaflets over the front lines. At the conclusion of the European War he was transferred to Japan for occupation duty, ferrying troops and supplies in C-54s until discharge. He was called up for active duty to participate in the Berlin Airlift and remained in the Air Force, where he was stationed in the United States, Japan, Korea, and Europe. He retired in May 1966. BEC: This is an interview with Bob Brady at his home. Are we in Holladay or alt Lake County? BOB: We are in Salt Lake, but we live in Cottonwood. Our address is Salt Lake. BEC: But you're in unincorporated county? BOB: Right. BEC: So we're in Salt Lake County. Today' s date is June 11, 2002. This is part of the "Saving the Legacy Project" and my name is Becky Lloyd. We're also being joined by Bob's wife, Irene. Bob, let's start with when and where you were born. BOB: I was born in Bingham, Utah, on June 9, 1922. BEC: Bingham Canyon? BOB: Yes, Bingham Canyon, Utah. That was before Kennecott was there. BEC: Was you father in mining? Is that why you were living there? BOB: No, my father was the head plumber at Utah Copper. That was before it was Kennecott. [Editor's note: The Kennecott Copper Corporation, established in 1903 to operate mines in Kennecott, Alaska, purchased a financial interest in Utah Copper 's Bingham Canyon mine in 1915 and fully acquired the company in 19 3 6. During those early days, some 15,000 people of widely-varying ethnicity lived in Bingham Canyon. Large residential communities were constructed on the steep canyon walls. The population declined rapidly as mining techniques improved, however, and the mining camps began to be swallowed up by the ever-expanding mine. Only Copper ton, |
