Show BILLT. BROOKE J R 2 0 notified him. This letter addressed to "Colonel told him he was pr mot d and g tting transferred to an Army base in Missouri. I can't remember the name ofth base. So he came in there, and he was a cocky guy, and I said to him, 'Colonel Thompson, I'll make a deal with you. I'll call up General Eisenhower and get him to promote you to full colonel if you'll transfer me into that camp from where they sail out to the United States." That was on about the first of October. He said, "What are you talking about? You've been down there drinking wine with those Frauleins." I said, "Yes, maybe." He said, "Now go over this slowly with me, will you? You're going to call up Eisenhower?" I said, "Well, I might not get to talk to him, but I'll get someone there, if you'll transfer me into the pool that's going." They had a transit camp over near Paris. I can't even remember the name of it. If they transferred you down there, that's were they processed you, and you'd be on your way on a ship headed for home. He says, "That's the craziest idea I've heard, but I'll go along with you." I said, "Okay." Bruce Whiles was the mail clerk and I said, "Bruce, give that letter to Colonel Thompson." So he gave that letter to him, and boy, he let out a bellow and came running in. He said, "Did you open the mail today?" And I said, "I opened all the mail we had, right here for you, all you see right on my desk here. Sergeant Wiles gave me a letter for you, and I hope that it's good." He says, "Well, I know it's good." Then he said, "Well, I know you just out-foxed me. Don't tell me you hadn't. Don't lie to me. I'm not going to say anything. I'm not going to ask you whether you saw it or not. You made a deal with me. I'll keep my word." BEC: Really? 21 |
