Show THIS IS AN INTERVIEW WITH JAMES R. KOHLE , R. ON UG T 25, 2004. THE INTERVIEWER IS BECKY B. LLOYD. THIS I THE PROJE T "SAVING THE LEGACY: AN ORAL HISTORY OF UTAH'S WORLD W R II VETERANS." TAPE Nos. 706.1 & 706.2 BEC: This is an interview with Jim Kohles at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Today's date is August 25, 2004. This is part of the "Saving the Legacy Project". My name is Becky Lloyd. So Jim, let's start with where you were born. JIM: I was born on July 26, 1920. BEC: Where was that? JIM: Provo, Utah. They call that area part of Provo now, but then that place was known as Ironton. BEC: I've never heard of that place before. Is there still a section of Provo known as Ironton? [Editor 's note: From an online history: The Columbia Steel Corporation had a pig iron manufacturing plant at Ironton. A sister company, the Carbon County Railway shipped coking coal for the iron plant from Columbia 's coal property south of Sunnyside. The Columbia Works at Ironton (immediately south of Provo) were built to provide pig iron to its open hearth furnaces at Pittsburg, California, on the West Coast. The Columbia Works was not a steel mill as it had no provision to make steel. It consisted of byproduct coke ovens, a single blast furnace of medium size, a pig machine, and ancillary support - it never had an open hearth or a rolling mill of any kind.] JIM: No, what was there was a retirement home for old age people. Then quite a few years ago they ripped it out. There's still a big plaque on that. It's just as you come down the road going over to Springville. As the road comes down and over the curve, it's sitting right there at the top. |
