He says Did Y u say that or not?" I wanted to explain my point of view. I said, 'Yes but ... ' He said, "No buts! Did you say it or not?" I gave three "buts" in there until finally he was getting mad at me. I finally said, "Yes, Sir." Then he settled down (laughs). He said, "Okay, that's forty hours extra duty. You'll be assigned to somebody to work off forty hours extra duty and there'll be no liberty, no leave, no nothing until those forty hours are worked off." Forty hours. I told him my wife was coming up the next week. I was told to go to the garage up there at Camp Bennion; Camp Bennion 8841. I reported to the chief there. This chief was a seven-striper; a gold chief. He'd been called back into the Navy because of the war. I walked in there and I guess I looked like a pretty sad kid. He said, "What's the matter, kid?" I told him my story. He said, "Well, that's a pretty sad story." I said, "Yes, but I've got to get out of here to take care of my wife." For an old chief he was a real neat guy [becomes emotional]. I loved him. He said, "Well, I'll tell you what I'm going to do." He had a brand new Chevrolet Sedan. I don't know how he got it or anything but it was brand new. It didn't have more than three or four hundred miles on it. He said, "I'm going to drive my car in here. He says, "If you'll clean, wash and wax that car, to my specifications and my inspection, I'll clear your forty hours extra duty." I said, "Chief, bring it in." It was about 4:30 in the afternoon. We'd had chow and we were on our free time. So I started working on his car right then. I worked all that evening and all that night. He came in about eight o'clock or nine o'clock in the morning to the garage. He said, "Are you here already?" I said, "I've been here all night." I said, "I worked on it all night and I've done the best I could on it." 7 |
