We're joined by Dee's son, Brent. Are you going to be here, thoughout? BRE: Sure. BEC: Great. Jump in if you have something to add. Dee, let's start with when and where you were born. DEE: I was born in Monroe, Utah, October 8, 1923. [Editor 's note: Monroe, Utah, is in central Utah, about ten miles south of Richfield.] BEC: Okay. What was your family doing in Monroe? DEE: They were farmers down there. My dad died when I was seven years old. It was during depression times and things weren't too good down there. We stayed there until I was twelve years old. We moved to Idaho with my step dad. I finally went away to the war from Blackfoot, Idaho. I was inducted in Pocatello, Idaho, and went to Farragut, Idaho, for boot camp. BEC: Let's go back. You were living in Monroe. Did your parents own a farm? DEE: They were buying one, yes. BEC: What were they growing? DEE: Well, being seven years old, I don't remember much about it. It was just a typical farm. We had a few milk cows and some chickens and pigs. It was just a farm. BRE: His dad was primarily a horse trader. |
