Show RAY: It wa after high school. I was supposed to report in January 43 but I am down with scarlet fever the day before I was supposed to report. Wh n I didn t r p rt, they sent three MP cars out to get me. BEC: Were you at home sick? RAY: Oh yeah, I was home. I was living in the garage. IRE: He was quarantined. BEC: Right, yes. They didn't know whether you were in the hospital or at home? RAY: I was just quarantined in the garage. BEC: Did the MPs believe that you were sick? RAY: Well, she said, "He's up there if you want to go get him." "Well, we don't want him." So then I reported back when the doctor relieved me. BEC: And said you were healthy. So that was in April when you went in? RAY: Well, it was before April. I had to report for my physical on April 1. BEC: I see. So you let them know you were ready and they said to report April 1? RAY: It wasn't many weeks before they nailed me. BEC: When you were in high school, did you have any paying jobs? RAY: Well, I'd go work with my dad once in a while. BEC: In carpentry and construction? RAY: Yes, and I contracted laying hardwood floors. BEC: Oh, really? Boy, that's hard work. RAY: Well, it's hard on the back. BEC: Okay, you showed up for your physical on April1, 1943. I guess you passed. RAY: Yes. 9 |
