Show h didn t think I had s en what I would tell him I d seen. W w re within ab ut a . . . h, le than a quarter-mile of the submarine when I seen it. FHM: Did you ever go on leave when you were in the military? WS: Yes. I came on leave when I left boot camp, and came to Salt Lake and then went down to San Diego. And when I left San Diego I had about ten days before we had to report in London, Connecticut. And before we went overseas we had another short leave. I think I had five days, and it took me almost five days to get home. So I called on the telephone and asked for an extension, and they gave me five more. FHM: Did you travel very much while you were in the military? WS: Oh, I'd say I traveled during all the things I had to do with the navy. We went to Key West, Florida for training on an 0-Boat. That's a small submarine. And we went to Newport, Rhode Island for gunnery training. And we had submarine training-advanced submarine training-at New London. We went quite a bit out from New London for training, down in Long Island Sound. And then when we left the states we went through the Panama Canal and then went to Hawaii. FHM: When you went to New London did you say Maine or New Hampshire from San Diego? WS: No. Went to New London, Connecticut. FHM: Oh, Connecticut. How did you travel? Did you travel by ship? WS: By train. FHM: And can you explain what that's like, to travel by train? WS: Well, we slept most of the time. We'd been on duty quite a bit before that, and so we slept. 8 |
