| Abstract |
Wadley was born in Fowler, Colorado. He enlisted in the army, and was shipped to Hawaii. He was there at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, and discusses his experiences that day. He was part of the 25th Infantry Division and participated in the landings on Guadalcanal in January 1943. He contracted malaria and was sent to a hospital, first in the New Hebrides, then Winter General Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. He was discharged August 1943. Interviewed by Joel Calderon. 18 pages. |

Show RALPH WADLEY 28 2002 JC: Oh, the World War I tyle ones? Briti h Army helmet ? You didn t g t th n w teel helmets for a while? RW: No, nope. In fact, I think we can see some of them here. I gue not. JC: Oh, right here. RW: Yes. JC: And that's you and ... ? RW: Another guy, McIntosh, I think was his name. JC: You remember all the people who served with you? RW: No. Somebody said "You remember him?" I said, "No, I have trouble remembering my own name!" (laughs) JC: Let's see, what else. I don't know if this book will help you, reference book. So, Guadalcanal was the only campaign you served in? The rest of the time you were back in the States seeing all these other young kids get drafted to go? RW: Yes. In fact when I got back I went to work for Mountain Bell, which at the time was a telephone company in Denver in '43. JC: By then, the war was like in full swing for the US. RW: Yes. My brother was into it at that time. JC: Did you get any letters from your brother describing where he was? Or wasn't he allowed? RW: He wasn't allowed to tell that. Of course, when he and I were together I could write and tell he was headed to Guadalcanal. JC: How did you and your brother end up in the same regiment? RW: Well, that was the way I planned it. Instead of having to serve a four-year hitch, you served a two-year hitch. That would serve your time required to meet the draft. So I 15 |
