Show DOROTHY JE N PU MIRE p 2002 JEA: o that was an excitement in our life to see Morrison Knud nand all th ir builders building this very large airport. It was large. It was supposed to be the cond defense from California. BEC: Wow. Well, wasn't that kind of upsetting, though to have your ranch taken? JEA: By that time, Mother and Dad were older. My brother was already in the army, so it wasn't as disturbing as it might have been. They were about ready to retire. BEC: So this was toward the end of the war, then, in '44 or something? JEA: No, it was about in '42 that they started building. Frank was in the officers training at that time, but Frank had already expressed the idea that when he came home he would like to be a gentleman farmer and not do anything (laughs). Dad didn't see the ranch as something he'd pass on except as a summer place or vacation place for Frank. BEC: Right. So actually, it worked out nicely, then, to be able to sell it? JEA: Yes, it did, to sell that much. And we'd gone from having as many cattle as we'd had at one time, so it was a very small operation as far as Dad was concerned. It wasn't a big deal. BEC: here? JEA: BEC: JEA: Yeah. That's interesting. So you said eventually your family moved down Yes, Dad and Mother got older. And by then your dad was retired? No, not for a long time. He still kept the small part of the ranch and he'd still spend a lot of time up there. Mother spent more and more time here, mainly because there wasn't that much going on at the ranch.
