| Abstract |
Gerald Smith was born in 1919 in Snowflake, Arizona. He worked at the family dairy until joining the Army Air Corps in January 1942. He washed out of pilot training due to airsickness and enlisted in the Navy, serving as a hospital corpsman with Mobile Unit 7 in New Caledonia. He then trained other corpsman in San Francisco. He was discharged in December 1945. 47 pages. |

BEC: This is an interview with Gerald Smith at his home in Salt Lake City Utah. Today's date is March 19, 2002. This is part of the Saving the Legacy project. My name is Becky Lloyd. Gerald, let's start with when and where you were born. GER: I was born in Snowflake, Arizona, 14th of March, 1919. I was born in an adobe house. BEC: You just had a birthday. GER: Yes, last Thursday (laughs). I was eighty-three. I told everybody I was only thirty-eight. 'Course, they didn't believe me. BEC: (laughs) In Snowflake, Arizona. What was your family doing in Snowflake? GER: That's where my dad and mother lived and their parents lived and my dad's grandfather, JesseN. Smith, was sent there to help settle it. He was the stake president for about twenty-five years and he was a cousin to the prophet, a full cousin, and knew the prophet-or met him because he's only about, what, the prophet died in 1844 and my great-grandpa was born in 1834. So he was only ten. But the prophet knew him and in his life history and stuff it tells about how he remembers the prophet and the prophet remembered him. But he drove John Smith's-who was the uncle to the prophet, a brother to his dad-wagon out to Salt Lake City. He was only about, what, thirteen or fourteen because he was born in ' 34. But, anyway, they settled in Pioneer Park first then I think they went up to the Mill Creek area, then they went in to the Bountiful area. Then |
