Show Harold D. Morris D cem r 14 2 ropes and put around it and we'd pull the ropes and it would turn the drum and in thi ay w rolled it up the hill. BEN: Are you talking a 55-gallon drum? HAR: Yes, a 55-gallon drum full of gas. We rolled it up the hill and I don't remember how we got up on the rack, but we did it some way. BEN: Uhuh. HAR: I was kind of proud of that. BEN: Now it never had a tent inspection or anything like that where they ... they look for requisitioned items or anything? They don't check those kind of things? HAR: No, they didn't care. BEN: Any other ingenuity that ... uh, in-field ingenuity that ... that you would make for your, of course, create for yourself for that kind of comforts? HAR: No, that's the only thing I can remember. BEN: How would you do your wash? HAR: Oh, let me see. Wash? I don't think we washed. Oh, yes, we must have. We had ... I think it was a mile, about a mile over the hill. We went down to shower. I don't remember much about washing our clothes. BEN: You never had an Italian person help out? HAR: No, only Italian people we had were cooks. The cooks ... they made pancakes. They always served 'em cold and they had cold syrup to put on the pancakes. I ate them a few times and I couldn't take it anymore. So, I finally didn't go to breakfast. I finally depended on K-rations. I'd take K-rations with me and, while we were forming up in formation, I'd take my K-ration and open it up. They had what they called C-rations but I |
