Lloyd Adamson (b. 1920) recalls his youth in Ogden, Utah, and joining the National Guard when he was sixteen. After Pearl Harbor he applied for flight training and ended up flying B-25s and B-17s. Adamson discusses his missions over Europe and his postwar military career. 47 pages. |

Show Loyd T. Adamson October 20, 2000 WIN: LOYD: WIN: LOYD: WIN: LOYD: WIN: So how long did you stay there? Oh, just a couple of months-not long enough. The war ended while you were there? Yeah-no it didn't. Well, in Europe. Yeah, the war in Europe ended. You got out in March and you had thirty days, so that would take you well into April. And then in May, on May gth, the war ended in Europe, so ... But the Japanese war was still going. LOYD: Then they sent me to the Ferry Command. See, I stayed in. I didn't get out. I stayed in and retired. So they sent me over to Memphis, Tennessee after I got through with that job down there. I didn't want to leave that job, but then they could see that we didn't need B-17s anymore. So they closed that production line maintenance down and sent me to Memphis, Tennessee. And I went into a ferry squadron where I ferried all four-engine airplanes. I tell my wife "Don't ever tell my boys I was a ferry pilot." Then I went through C-54 school because I could see there was no point in bombers anymore. So I went into cargos. And then they sent me off to Travis and I had that run from Travis to Tokyo in the C-54s. WIN: LOYD: WIN: LOYD: The old globe master? Well, no. Wasn't that the '54?
