Show VERN GLADE MAY 1, 2001 Army-took thirty shots to stop one of them. So we did. I'm glad we didn't do anything. We didn't tangle with him. We could see him on shore but we never- BBL: Could you? You saw some of the bears? VER: Oh, absolutely. And I've seen pictures of bear hides that would go from the floor clear to that sideways open to the ceiling, as high as 1,700 pounds. Can you imagine how-they're just huge. They are huge. They used to have one at ZCMI that a fellow over on a couple of streets here killed it, Emo Samuelson; he's dead now. They had it in the ZCMI and I think it was ten foot tall. So you'd run into something. BBL: That's amazing. VER: It's all changed, see. Afognak, that's right next to it, and Kodiak, they didn't have all these-now they have. I take the Alaskan Magazine. They have all these hunting lodges. It's all changed now. There, at that time, it was just as wild as could be. BBL: Wild and pristine. VER: Yeah, I'll say. It was just neat. You'd see all these different places on the boat and it was neat. It was great. The storm's the only thing I didn't like. I didn't like the storms. BBL: Yeah. Were the storms bad all year round? VER: Oh, yeah. Just as bad. You get some days are okay. They were nice to go along, but usually you're just hanging on for dear life. BBL: Wow. VER: Most the time. But it was fun. It was fun. What else do you want to know? That about covers it? 29 |
