| Abstract |
Forbes (b. 1922) recalls his graduation from Davis High School in 1940 and attendance at Weber College prior to answering an advertisement by the government for "mechanic learners." After a brief period of training he was transferred to the Salt Lake Army Air Base where he and his fellow-workers helped ready lend-lease planes for delivery to England. He served at various bases around the U. S. before being shipped to Casablanca in North Africa, where he remained until his discharge in March 1946. 35 pages. |

Show ol. DeeR. Forbe temperature gauge. They said if on of tho b aring g t h t, th hip h in a new bearing so you get behind the conv y but I uckily w n r had an r blem . It just kept turning seventy-eight RPMs for tw nty-eight day . It took twenty-one days to go from Newport New Virginian to ibraltar. an seven more days in the Mediterranean to go from Gibraltar up to apl s Italy. Wh n were in the Mediterranean there was an American submarine that was in th con y. I guess he was there ... JOEL: .. to make sure there were no German U-boats? DEE: Yah. Anyway, he surfaced at the time. That was interesting. It was a fun trip. Anyways, we got off the ship at Naples, Italy and then we went to a camp not an air base, just a camp, and stayed there, I don't know ten days or so. JOEL: This was this right after the Allies took over Italy? ut DEE: Well, they were still fighting up around Rome in that area, but where we were it was all liberated, you know, so we weren't in any danger. This was in the fall, and it was about the same temperature I was used to at home. You'd see frost in the morning, and that was the first time I'd seen frost for quite a while. We got to go see the ruins of Pompeii and we got to go see some other sites in Naples, and then they put us on a C47. I was hoping I'd stay in Italy on a bomber base, but they had other plans, and they sent me to Casablanca, North Africa. We went to Casablanca, North Africa and that was a big air transport base. It was the western terminal for a long air route that clear went to China. I was in what they called the North African diyision of the air transport command. This is the air transport 14 |
