Show T J. weren t supposed to have any food whatever in our apartm nt - nothin . n morning a girl got a package of cookies from home and we had just op d it d it announced that we were having a surprise inspection. Here we had these co ki and had nowhere to put them. We didn't know what in the world to do but put them in th oven. Well, that was about the first place they looked. So we got demerits for having food in the apartment, and we had to go out and polish all the banisters, and we were on the third floor. And they took the cookies. They probably enjoyed them (laughs). But we had just barely opened them and we hadn't even had one (laughs). BEC: That's funny. RUTH: I really enjoyed my Navy experiences. I was sent down to Pensacola, Florida, from there, for my gunnery training. I taught turret maintenance and operation, air-to-air combat, plane recognition, thirty- and fifty-caliber machine guns, the whole thing. BEC: Wow. You were teaching the men? RUTH: The men that manned the gun turrets in the planes. BEC: Were you able to choose to go to gunnery? RUTH: No, I was asked if I would go there. They asked for anyone who knew anything about guns. Well, I had gone pheasant hunting with my dad and my brothers, so I knew a little bit about guns. I was picked and I loved it. I went home on leave one time and my dad took me pheasant hunting (laughs). He said, "Well, you should do real good now." I forgot to take the safety off, and my dad laughed so hard he split his pants (laughs). BEC: (laughs) RUTH: He said, "I thought you were supposed to be a gunnery instructor." I had wanted to show off how good I was (laughs). He never got over that. 11 |
