Show M J.D L hina? DEL: No. I don't remember anything about that. WIN: As you were going through high school what were your a pirations a education? 7 a furth r DEL: Well, I planned-because my two sisters had gone to college to become school teachers-I thought, well I'll go to college at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. That was my plan. WIN: You didn't have aspirations to continue the family farm? DEL: No, no. WIN: Did you have a plan as to what you would major in, and what your life work would be at that time? 1 DEL: Well, I thought I would like to be an engineer. The thing being, that I was mechanically inclined. I did a lot of building things, and a lot of carpentry things, and just everything because I had a natural talent for that type of thing. So I just thought in my mind, well, I want to become an engineer. Anyway, that was my aspiration at the time. WIN: Sure. DEL: So I graduated in '39, and worked the farm that summer. Then, in the fall, I went to the University of Wisconsin at Madison. I forgot to mention, when we were talking about the war and the things that were going on, that even the last years of high school-! had to get permission from the parents-I joined the National Guard because I knew some fellows that belonged to it. It was quite a thing for some of the high school students to be in-in their last year of high school-the National Guard. So I did. I 12 |
