Show Dx .Vincent Wagner,Taiku Hospital, Taiku, Shanai, uhiBa<* July 13,'30. I dida'jE write any letter last week so I guess you are all wondering if we are still alive* Yes a lot has happened'. I had the 2nd and 3rd of July with Grace at Yfl Tao Ho,taking advantage of a trip over of the Taiku oar. 1 found her counting the minutes until I can begin my month's vaoatioa* A telegram from Br. Watson says that Mrs* Watson has had a kidaey operation aad that his retura is iadefiaitely delayed* Heace the Feachow hospital is still without a foreign doctor, save that we have loaned them Br.Hemiagway from Taiku* Br.H.is supposed to he having his vaoatioa now,but he looks forward to months in th© Feachow hospital and a vaoatioa sometime* acaoEtaxa To go hack to July 3rd* We drove back to Taiku going around by way of Taijcuaafu aad Yfttze.Got a late start*Soon after midaight it began to rain. We had to stop for the road was at oace so greasy that driving was impossible* You act only slid all over, hut you made deep ruts in the soft surface so that the police will not let you proceed* Fortunately it did aot rain loag and we could proceed about 2 AM* That was July 4th* It turaed cold during that night of exposure and I did not have any wraps* So I went to bed with a left maxillary sinusitis* That's why I didn't write last Sunday* Mail from YMSaoho to Taiku is by carrier-takes 2 days aad only comes 3 times a week* Also it is interrupted by raias* However I got a note from Grace July 7 written July 5-a very good time-saying she was down with severe dysentery and had beea moved down to the Hausske mill on her bed so that Clara Hausske could care for her and family* Then we had a big raia. Several inches in the next 48 hours and nothing moved at all-mail,or travelers* The Taiku car had returned to Yfttaoho(50 miles) just before the storm broke and was stranded there. It attempted to return to Taiku July 10,but had to turn hack on account of the swollen river making the ferry unsafe* However that afternoon Albert Hausske did make it thru aad I returnee: with him the next day to Yfttaoho* I found Grace well aad aad hack at the Wilson's with her family* But both Elisabeth aad Hoy had caught severe colda aad coughed(? whooping cough, which has been severe both at Feachow aad at Yfttaoho laet month with the death of little Happy Earmolds). I had come just in time* Elizabeth's temperatur© was oaly 102,hut her respirations were 60 per minute aad her pulse 165 aad weak. She had pneumonia We gave her 6 inhalations that night. Seemed as though she coughed contia-uously, but ao whoop. It seemed best to take her iato the Feachow hospital. Though her temperature weat to 104.3,pulse 170 aad respitatioas 65 the first night, energetic treatment aad good aursing soon set her on the road to recovery. We have time to explore the Feachow hospital*,Be cause they have oaly oae of their two foreign nurses this year, oaly one instead of three regular Chinese doctsrs, and a borrowed foreign doctor instead of two regular foreign doctors, they have closed half of the hospital* Also cliaies are held oaly oae day a week iastead of every day* Even so they have 60 ia-patieats aad have a hard time keeping the numbers out aad themeelvejLjfrcm hreaking under the straia* The plaat is just about as big as th© SaroSspital-spread out more with the nurses liviag oa the 3rd floor of the central unit* the grounds are lovely. Many aative trees aad shrubs have beea pleated uatil oae can walk aloag maay shaded paths with flower beds, really beautiful* The residence compound is also rich with trees aad shrubs* Makes mex loag for them la Taiku, where there is aot eaough waters for it* However la Taiku we are outside the eity wall so we can see aad eajoy the beautiful mountains* The Feachow hospital is tucked "behind the eity wall ia the HW coraer so that evea from the 3rd floor the city wall is higher aad shuts off the view of the mouatains. Ho wonder they developed their gardens. -VF. |
