Some of you do, or some of you use i t glibly Bnd sneeringly. Some of you have never heard i t , and for you I will t e l l i t s horrid meaning, "Rice Christians" refers to those Chinese converts who become Christians ie Cjl ptisi .Oafl kl: who have become Cgflfttisns for the sake of the rice and other benefits they con get from the n i s s i o i ind the Church. 1fRice Christians" are supposed to have l i t t l e, if any, expectations of paying for the benefits received. There rosy be such people, but they are offset by the fine example of such good folk as old He Mao Lin. Let me t e l l you more cv( the story of He Mao Lin. Though he has but 2 %0x hslf acre of land from which to make a living, he not only works almost all of the time for his Church, aid that, too, without; pay, but he stands ready, never-the«less, to pay his obligations, as we found when he came lately to the Mission Hospital to be f i t t e d for a pair of glasses. Most justiafiably, since, he, himself, is working so faithfully for the Church, He Mao Lin might have expected to get his pair of bifocals for nothing. But there was no such thought in his mind. He had come expecting to p ^ , and pty he did,. No?/, I don't mean to be impolite, but you know missions and hospitals need money in order to "cariy on." Are you paying your obligations to the Church so that The Church can help i t s missions, or are you l e t t i ng He Hao Lin get ahead of you in that respect? Are you so sure you're not a "rice Christian."? |
