Show Miss Wang Ching Hsien took a special course in midwifery during the year and she and Miss Sun have cared for all the maternity cases (except the abnormal) in Dr. Cooke's absence. The Obstetrical Department has made a good record, having cared for ninety-nine newborn babies and their mothers, only a few less than the highest record of one hundred twelve in 1934 when Dr. Cooke was on duty. Mr. Chu Tze Chen was invited to take charge of evangelism in the Hospital after Mr. Li left to take up the work in the social service center in the heart of Lintsing City. In addition to his work in the Hospital, Mr. Chu has been made head of the committee of Christians who are caring for the six hundred flood refugees that were sent into our Compound to live in the Boys' and Girls' School buildings. Besides seeing that these folk are sheltered, clothed and fed, voluntary Christian workers mingle with them daily, telling them of the Jesus Way of Life, teaching them to read and write, and encouraging small industries among them. This service has had to take the place of the follow-up work which our evangelist has usually done among the patients who have left the Hospital. This report is not a happy one, but to lighten the picture, let me add a word of appreciation of the faithfulness of the Staff under the unusual difficulties and discouragements. They have carried on uncomplainingly even tho at times their salaries could not be paid, and tho the Hospital was short- - 6 - |
