Show A COUNTY-WIDE VACCINATION CAMPAIGN IN LINTSING, SHANTUNG HUGH L. ROBINSON, A.B., M.D. In the spring of 1930 a vaccination campaign was conducted in the county of Lintsing, Shantung. This report will record the methods and summarize the results. During the preceding winter Dr. I. T. Hsu, the superintendent of the Lintsing Memorial Hospital, frequently mentioned vaccination to officials, educators, civic and Party leaders, gradually stimulating their interest in what he intended to propose. In February the local Peoples Party Headquarters was induced to call a meeting of officials and representatives of philanthropic bodies to discuss Dr. Hsu's suggestions. After hearing his arguments it was voted to train men and to conduct a county-wide campaign, and the staff of the hospital was put in charge of the execution of the plan. A budget of $2000 was made up and approved. The county treasury was to provide $700, the local Relief Society $700, the Chamber of Commerce $400 and the Red Swastika Society $200. It was decided to do all vaccinations free. Advertisements for students to enter the training course were published and over one hundred candidates of grammar school education or its equivalent, registered. Many of them held a bachelor's degree under the late imperial examination system. Eighty-eight appeared for examination. Each had a physical examination and written tests in Chinese and arithmetic were given by the Lintsing Commissioner of Education. The twenty-five candidates with the highest averages were accepted as students for a week's training. They were accommodated in empty dormitory space in the boys' school near the hospital and meals served by a caterer.
