E l l i s, Tehchow, Shantung. Dear Mr. E l l i s : i Replying to yours of June 11th, I did notice the l e t t er from Mr. Sargent which came earlier enclosed in a l e t t e r to Helen. It did not seem to he very definite; I could not make out whether he had asked for membership for you in the "Bay association", or was going to do so formally, or how far the matter had gone. This procedure, however, plainly cancels my l e t t e r to Mr. Moore of the "Frontier Association". Will you please destroy that? We cannot be shooting two arrows at once. In case Mr. Sargent's negotiations should not be successful, I should, of course, be perfectly willing to write again to Mr. Moore and say what I did before. The date would be different, however, and possibly some circumstances. I t seems to me i t would be well to ask Mr. Sargent to let you know definitely just what has been done, so that you can take other action if needed. Please call on me for help at any point, if I can give i t. Are you not going to be coming to peitaiho, you and Mrs. E l l i s ? We had taken great satisfaction in the thought of Mrs. E l l i s heading up the Religious Education Committee at East Cliff. An architect has just been down there, looking over the s i t e with care, and getting ready to draw plans once more for a chapel. (I like to call it that rather than an "Assembly Hall".) They may get something started this supner, although the building will not be ready for use. I understand the Hayes-Mead porch i s not available this summer. Sincerely yours, EEC:MET ICdb^Xfe.
