Show m Lintsing,Shantung,China Jan.11 1921 My own dear Paja, • - Such loads of letters I nave wanted to write to you but ' here I have just the weest bit of a time before the mail-man is likely to come. ( But don't think of autos when you read that.] Two welcome letters have come, and I am so glad for them I hope the winter was a mild one and your acnés better. How lovely the orchard and hills look! Your letters make me see tham You are wondering about the Famine and the poor here. If I were less busy at the schools and did more country work I* would be seeing more of the suffering. There is a lot being done but not enough. The city authorities, who usually open a kitchen i and give free millet gruel to the poor, did not daré attempt it ti this year, for they said that the crowds would certainly be so/Wi great that they could not begin to feed them and could not nelp the crushing of people in the jam. But the» are giving mor.ey to lots who are very poor. There have been about two hundred men working here, carrying dirt and building up the road inside our compound, who were paid with relief funds-No,they are given a portion of grain for themselves and their families. They will be busy on the new road soon.THE RED.CROSS ROAD. Supplies have been unloaded in our yard-great piles of grain sacks that will nelp a lot. Oí' course there are watchmen at night. The horne for little children is one way we really help. And today a gift of | 150.pp has come so that more can be added' The room of the Sargent Ward is plenty large enough for more. They have only millet and corn fiour bread and millet gruel, with a little chopped salt turnip, but are so much better off than if r not here. Out in the country "home" where.Ma Shuang Yuan has charge they give no uread and no turnips, and bought only a few oíd clothes for those who had none at all,and ¿iave ta^en in 15 extra chiluren. Ruth is just back from opening the storeTroom at the home and is laughing over the excitement caused by her slip-over sweater-the children were so puzzled to know how she got into it! They are a dear little group,as lovable and as responsive as any kiduies. Some are in tne Kgn. and some read . Their Christmas pictures are on the wall ana they love to íook at tnem ana tell about tnem. The stars ana oaings maae at Kgn. help to Drigaten oae room too. Today some of tne Biüj.t women arw on un» *^.y t,o an pu^-^^ out-station chapel to open a study-class for women there. Fov I wisn I might be along! But I can't this year. My language teacñe eays he will come over eveninga to help our servants read, They have sorae fine books-the same the women are to study I have sent the little folks of the station invltations to supper on my birthday, and am going to decórate for them. 11 "will be the time for térra exams at the school and so is sure to be a mighty full day. But I will be thinking of my dear family and wil be remembering how many lovely things you all have been dolng for little me every year of my life.
