Show OOPY. noKca mim Mission OF urn mmzom BOARD* May 25, M0« Dear Friendat t h i s i s not m bo a news l e t t e r , but one asking your help on a pari&c • ular problem which I shall state, as clearly as I can. Tou know how missionary funds and workers have been cut during the last few years. The amount of work to be done has not diminished* however, so ?jiost us ar® trying to d© l e t s more than w© oan do well, and s t i r r i n g up our blood pressure© mud wearing ourselves out t i l l wo wont be able to do any of i t on® of these days, i f we don*t look out. We need seme more paeple to help divide up the Jobs. ' In our North Qiina Mission me eeuld use eight or ton people who do not speak Chinese to d© work which does not require the use of Ohinese, thus releasing these of us who do speak i t for work where the language i® essential. Meanwhile there must b® i n the United States as many as eight or ton people who could and would like to eeme out hero for volunteer service for a brief period* The question i s how to find th«a# It may be like the proverbial needle in a haystack, but I have" the idea of using magnets to reduce the diff i c u l t y , and I hope you are a l l very magnetic* la other words, I am asking friends to pass the w d along and suggest the ©ppertunity to anyene who may be interested and who oan meet the requirements* -x, ***• f i I s * 9? these requirements i s financial. We cannot say anything, either for travel or for living expenses after you get here, ill funds which could possibly be used for euch purposes are already in use and stretched to the limit* So any applicants will have to pay their own' way m% and their own way tut and their own expenses ^hile they are here. But such expenses may not be as high as you imagine. For instance, i t i s possible to get fres the Pacific Coast to Peiping for one hundred and f i f ty American dellais without jeopardizing l i f e or honor, ¥rm Hew Isrk on a freighter i t costs two hundred and twenty dollars. There are a great maay opportunities t@ spend mere, but you can do I t for that. Living expenses in a missionary compound are cheaper than in many places in America, In the f i r s t place, ym will not have to pay rent, as the houses belong to the American Board for the use of those working in the Mission, And for a l l other ordinary expenses, forty American dollars a month is sufficient. That covers board, laundry, heat and service, But i t does not include iteney for curios, or for travel in the winter and sumaer vacations, for which almost any one would Ilk® to take advantage. If you haven*t the money, there is no us<§ talking. But supposing you de have i t , you would like to know what kind gf work would be expected of you. The need i s felt by our seven boarding schools, which need peep1# to teach English, help with music of almost every kind, and with a t h l e t i c s . ' g» addition, there tllTt l*lAmff* •tfS#fmfW* ***** %hw nmd m t be P ^ ^ i o n a l s , and might not give full time to i t . People with some teaching experiences are naturally preferred for the English classes, but a person L to get mZLm* somewhere, and we are not unwilling to be practiced en. experience For various reasons we think best to limit our invitation to college graduates between the ages of twenty-five and sisty, and to those whe would be will-lag to spend two y^are in one B l a o # . Usually the f i r s t iVw M , t h f i Z i t taken up with getting adjusted to moh Z AArA J/ f ?* i a r g e l y year usefulness is a ci greater l! « „ » ! i f f e r @ f t t environment, and the second can teach in any of t ^ t^A.7 Jf , T ® T ! m n m **** mm* b @ c a ^ »*»« very well. »WUl hrt men can not teach in the g i r l s ' schhols |
