While our education system is intended to help students grow and succeed, it is structured to support majority students, and not nurture the diverse needs of minority students. Refugee youth face many barriers in the education system, and often are not given resources or opportunities to share their experiences. This study focused on the experiences and voices of refugee youth through filmed interviews. These interviews were used to see how learning about their experiences informed teachers, staff, and administration at schools across three districts in Utah. Teachers, staff, and administration completed pre and post surveys in conjunction to viewing the interviews. This study focused on understanding the experiences of refugee youth in public high schools in Salt Lake County. The findings demonstrate the complexities of time in high school, the importance of sharing and being understood, equity in education, school structures, practices, and policies, and the need for teacher-initiated help. |
