Dr Castle was born in Webster County, Mississippi in 1928. Dr Castle received his B.S from the University of Mississippi in 1947. Dr Castle completed his M.D at Duke University in 1951. Dr Castle did his residency training at the Salt Lake County General Hospital where he completed a fellowship in cardiology as well. Dr Castle joined the faculty of the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1959. Out of a need for more physicians in rural Utah, he created the Utah Physicians Assistant Program (UPAP) with William Wilson, Ph.D. Dr Castle was Chair of the Department of Family and Community (later Preventive) Medicine from 1970-1984. Upon stepping down as department chair, Dr Castle transitioned back to a full-time practice of cardiology and continued to serve part-time at the School of Medicine. Dr Castle was former chair of the American Heart Association Teaching Fellowship Program. Dr Castle was named Physician of the Year in 1985 by the Utah Medical Association. Dr Castle retired in 1998 as Emeritus Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine. Dr Castle died in 2016. |
