The purpose of this study was to determine how effective parent education was as a part of an early childhood Montessori classroom. The school is situated in a highly educated and affluent community. Working with 15 parents from my classroom, I created 6 different handouts that had tips of the week based on the Montessori philosophy and early childhood development. By educating families on the Montessori method and ways to create a child friendly environment at home, it was hoped that children would benefit from bridging the gap between the school and the home. For this phenomenological study, data was collected over a three-month period. The data sources included parent surveys, interviews, and researchers journal to provide evidence of the effectiveness of the parent education efforts. Results indicated that parents had little commitment to the process and that time constraints were an issue for them. However, parents were welcoming to any kind of information and when used, found the information helpful in their child's education. I plan to continue my parent education program with a blog site and parent education meetings. |
