Claxton, State Council of Defense State of Utah Council of Defense 1917 . ' i= ll PRESIDENT WILSON’S STATEMENT. To the People of Utah: The following official statement by l‘i‘cs‘— dt-nt \Vilson, llr. l’. l’. Claxton, lVllllth States commissioner of liducation. and Governor liamlitrgcr, indicate clearly that in this time of grave national concern it is a patriotic duty to maintain all of our schools at a high degree of efficiency and to encourage all young men and women who can consistently do so to at— tend school this present school year, 191771918. These statements are respectfully sub— mitted to the people of Utah in the hOpe that our State which has taken a leading part in carrying out the national program occasioned by the war, may not hesitate in the educational features of the war program. Utah is I “I have, therefore, no hesitation in urging olleges and technical schools to endeavor to maintain their courses as far as possible on the usual basis. There will be many young men from these institutions who will serve in the armed forces of the country. Those who fall below the age of selective conscription and who do not enlist may feel that by pur— suing their courses with earnestness and diligence they also are preparing themselves for valuable service to the nation. “I would particularly urge upon the young people who are leaving our high schools that as many of them as can do so, avail themselves this year of the opportunities offered by the colleges and technical schools, to the end that the country may not lack an adequate supply of trained men and women.” an education—loving state and this appeal is prob— ably unnecessary, but the State Council of Defense cannot render fully its duty without STATEMENT OF GOVERNOR SIMON BAMBERGER. making this statement at this time of the open— ing of our schools and colleges. \Ve urge upon the schools that they make special and ample provisions for the care of the young people who because of agricultural or industrial needs are obliged to enter schools late or leave their studies for short periods during the time of crop harvesting or other “I can think of no time in the nation’s history when the continuance of schools and colleges was more necessary than at the pres— ent time. The courses of study, naturally, should be adapted to the needs of the nation, but these needs are so many and so varied that they call for the fullest and most comprehensive training. “While we are all hoping and praying for peace none may say how long this war may last, nor how urgent may be the need of our industrial activities. STATE COUNCIL OF DEFENSE, By L. H. Farnsworth, Chairman. \V. C. Ebaugh, Secretary, Salt Lake City, Utah. October 1st, 1917. 2 country for men of skill and education, that we may continue to prosecute this war with persevering v:gor. I regard it as the duty of every young man and woman not now in the active service of the government to continue in school, in order to pre are for the obliga- tions that are coming.” 122:7{38 ‘ 3 STATEMENT OF DR.
