Gonorrhea & Chlamydia: A Systematic Review of Screening, Treatment, and Public Health Education for Adolescents and Young Adults

There is an unexpected and steady increase in gonorrhea and chlamydia that is being seen in the United States. This surprising trend is seen despite the increasing understanding of the infectious agents and the factors influencing a person's risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STI). Educating the public about risk factors is an important component for controlling the spread of these STI's. Providers must be kept up to date, especially given the rapidly evolving landscape of antimicrobial resistance. Equally important, is the accessibility of STI screening locations including provider's offices, community clinics, and home-based testing products. The goal of this review is to increase both opportunities to screen and provide education about STIs. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are not new pathogens but our approach to treatment and control should be.
