Show 2 3 » > | , <i [789 LANIER PLACE. NORTHWEST WASHINGTON 9, D. C. 30 September 1970 Dear Friends: As you know, Dee Morgan is enjoying a holiday of travel. Shortly before she left, she insisted upon my visiting for a week-end in her house. One of my pleasures there was reading the first chapters of Dr. Atiya's book on the history of the Copts a trememdously impressive volume packed with much that I should like to know. When Dee returns and has finished your book, I shall hope to borrow it. AS you know, I am trying to get Myron's book on Persian vaults completed. Thanks to Dr. Mostofi's help, Professor Kuban, Chairman of the Department of History of Architecture and Art, Technical University, Istanbul, competent in the field of Islamic architecture, was brought here for three weeks in June to examine and report on the work already completed and to estimate how long it would take to finish the book. Professor Kuban states that it will take about a year and a half including a 2 month's field trip in Iran. As you know, the grant to Myron was cut because of President's Johnson's economy drive and Myron was unable to take any remuneration for himself. A much larger budget will be required for Professor Kuhan because he^has a wife and 2 children (ages 12 and 17) and would have to bring them to Washington and find a house for them here. In such cases the Endowment for the Humanities encourages "matching funds" as well as the usual cost sharing -- I am sure that Professor Mostofi will do his best. The next time that you come to Washington, please give me the opportunity and pleasure of seeing you both. With affectionate greetings to you both, P. S. I do not anticipate that the Islamic Archives will be iturned over to any institution until Myron's book is finished because the Archives contain pertinent data. In any case, the criteria listed on page 18 of Myron's report to HEW will be followed as much as possible • |
