Show UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY ALBERT RAY OLPIN July 13 j 1956 PRESIDENT Dr. Aziz S. Atiya Department of Near-Estern Studies University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan Dear Doctor Atiya: Following receipt of your kind letter of June 26 I conferred with Dr. G. Homer Durham, academic vice president; Dean Harold W. Bentley, of the summer school; and Dr. L. H. Creer, head of our History Department; and found all of them very enthusiastic about the possibility of having you with us during the first six weeks of our summer session in 1957. The first term Of our summer school will begin June 18 and finish July 23. I hope you will find it possible to meet this schedule and, if so, we would like to have you submit a list of courses on which you might lecture or conduct symposia. We will immediately counter with our own observations or suggestions and will submit a contract indicating the stipend which we will be in a position to pay you. I hope this procedure will be satisfactory to you. We have had some really hot weather in Salt Lake City for a few days, but for the most part the summer here has been pleasant. Our Summer Music Festival is drawing to a close, with two more performances of "Madame Butterfly" yet to be given. This opera and the light opera, "The King and I", have been highlights of our summer program this year. Perhaps twenty or twenty-five thousand people will have witnessed them under the stars in the Stadium Bowl. The members of my family wish to be remembered to you, and incidentally I have had all of my children and grandchildren in Salt Lake for the past two weeks. I may be driving to Phoenix, Arizona, tomorrow to take my daughter and her two children back to their home. With kindest regards to you, Mrs. Atiya, and your children. Very sine ARO:cw |
