Show THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY March 31, 1964 Professor Aziz S. Atiya Center for Intereultural Studies University of Utah Salt Lake City 12, Utah Dear Professor Atiya, I wonder whether you have any notes about Mt. Sinai Arabic MS. 455? Professor Weitzmann of Princeton University has just shown me photographs ©f two fly-leaves of this manuscript, foliated 1 and 4, and they contain a liturgical lectionary *n l&tia written in a script that has definite affinities with the Latin Psalter on Mt. Sinai (Slavonic MS. 5)» Since I had already come across a second example of this script last summer in the fly-leaves of Sinai Greek MS. 5^7. there seems to "be more and more evidence of the existence of a Latin writing center in the last prior to the Crusades. Since you have seen the original manuscript, any notes you may have made about these leaves, in particular about their size, the color of their ink, or the kind of parchment they are made of, or about the place of origin of the main Arabic text and the age of the present binding of the whole manuscript, would be most useful. I am sorry t© be troubling you again, but where else can I turn when you are almost the only scholar in the world who has studied the manuscript in situ. If you have any information to add to that in Dr. Clark's Checklist, I would be most appreciative. With my best wishes, &&• *"* sf^ Sincerely yours, ch J. A. Lowe |
