Show I CERmmD go TEACHER I I. S. I. A. NEWSLETTER MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Robin Locke President 1977-78 saw chandes in L S. I. A •• The certification progam had big changes and more to come; clinics made good moves; Spring Clinic at Jackson Hole; night clinics at Park City; Examiners clinic and Examiners College. I would like to take this opportun-ity to remind everyone that this is your organization. Your officers and Board of Directors donate many days each year to hopefully better I. S. I. A.. Let me say that we do car e about your problems or interest regardless of how involved you are in ski teaching. The Newletter will provide space for your suggestions or questions. I would remind you that it does not require any effort to "Bitch" but it does require effort to accom plish something. p. S. LA. Domonstration Team this season will attempt to invite as many people as Divisions can send. to where the D-team goes for fall training, to attend a 2-3 day workshop I would encourage attendance of certification people or those which do most of the clinicing in the Division-- SkiSchoolDirectors, Examiners, etc. The problem when the D-team 1 donducts clinic s, is that if they only meet with instructors, there is potential problem with Ski School Directors who sometimes feel that the D-team undermines their efforts. The D-team can be more effective if they are not just used in separate sessions. This can avoid or help clear up and misunderstanding concerning technique, methodolgy as presented by D-team. The D-team also plans after above training sessions, to still visit other Divisions if time permits. There are not enough team members to go around, however they would like to keep workshops £entralized in just a few places so that team members aren't spread out individually all over the country for one day sessions. This arrangement would be a more effective use of the team, because it would pro-vide an opportunity for key people in all Divisions to meet, work and learn together. The best time to have the D -team to conduct clinics would be the last of November and early Dec-ember. Jens Husted gave this report to the p. S. I. A. Board of Directors meeting in Denver this summer with this year an Interski year, we can understand why the D-team will be limited in their time for clinics. I would like to see the I. S. I. A use the D-team with our clinics in the future. The D-team has done a g.eat deal to put the American Ski Instructor on the map. Some changes on the Board of Directors, Paul Norum, Steve Bagley, and Allen Titensor have resigned. Gary Summers Doug Harmon, and Fran Wikstrom will replace the resigning Board members. News from Targhee ... Snow is not a necessary part of Ski Instructor's Fun Recipes. Proving this was a very easy job for about half of Targee's Ski School Instructors this summer. Hebgen Lake was the location for one weekend in August of fun and games, mostly fun. Gene Palmer's troups gathered at "Paco's{GarySummers) Yellowstone Holiday Resort on the north shore to play volley ball, sall a catamaran, swim, water ski - drink beer and tell many, many, many, jokes. The winer routine was easily forgotten under such ideal condition, As 80 degree weather, clear cool water and three good ski boats. Isn't it nice to fi nd that some of the ski instructors you work with really have shapes under all those ski clothe.s The beer was properly placed within the reach of volleyball battlers, water ski skimmers, and lazy 10ungers, and when the fire was started, it wasn't hard to tell which were going to stay up half the night and tell the mOf jokes. Boy, were some of them bad! Palme discussed skills, but his wife C1arAnn is a better water skier than he is. Paco did mos1 of the boat driving and his wife Shan sure looks better in a bathing suit than he does as does Cheney's wife. John Walters' wife, Jack's wife, Bowcutt's girlfriend, Val's girl friend, and even Bybee's wife looks better the he does, and she even water skied pretty gOO( Each summer this bunch gets together fo one weekend of fun and this weekend is alway talked about throughout the entire ski season. What do some of the rest of you do -let's heal about it. Grand Tar ghee Ski Schoc Bob J. Dave has had experience running clinics for certification, coaching the Westminster ski team and is currently a back-up examiner on the technical certification team. VaZ Stephens Brighton I look forward to maintaining the high standards that Duane set in his position at Brighton. I feel Duane did an excellent 3 job of running the Brighton ski school and I feel no need for and major changes. We will, however, try to incorporate racing into our instructor s training to a higher degree, as well as providing racing instruct;ion and a standard race for our ski school custoners. We have cut a new trail at Brighton starting from the top of the Majestic lift. We will be using this trail for standard races as well as for instructor clinics. I also intend to use cross country skiing to further develop the skills of instructor s in addition to including it in our programs. WHAT'S NEW AT PARK CITY Much has changed at the Park City Ski School. There is a new Ski School Director, and with the new director there are some changes in the Ski School, and there are some new programs. The new Director is Duane Vigos who comes to Park City from Brighton where he was Director of the Brighton Ski School for several years. Duane replaces Rene Farwig who left to take a position at a major Canadian Ski Resort. To anyone to whom Duane Vigos needs an introduction, he is severing in his second term as a member of the I.S.I.A. Board of Directors; he is an I:S.I.A. examiner; and for a number of years he has been deeply involved in skiing as a profession. The Park City Ski School will still be as big as ever, -- 135 total instructors, including many holdovers from previous years, some new faces from other resorts, and some new recruits to the profession from the Instructor's Training Course. Most of the familiar programs will still be offered, including: weeklong lessons, all-day lessons, learn-to-ski weeks, and the junior learn-to-race program. But there will also be some new programs and some improvement in ski school procedures. Lower skill students will be taught with an ATM method utilizing a very short ski for the first lessons (100 cm). And the Basic Christie will be the basis for instruction at all skill levels right up to advanced parallel. Of the new program, possibly the most interesting will be a week long program for women only named II Ladi es Edge". The Ladi es Edge wi 11 be taught by women instructors and will be specifically designed to be strong where instruction for women has been deficient in the past. For example, Ladies Edge will focus on theories of physical awareness, and individual classroom seminars--which are an important part of Ladies Edge--will deal with such subjects as ski tuning and equipment care, physical conditioning, the psychology of sports, and more. Other programs at Park City that will receive greater emphasis this year are the PreSchool Program and the NASTAR Clinics. The Pre-School Program will be planned to take advantage of a brand new terrain garden in the beginners' teaching area. (All beginning course will also have access to the terrain garden.) The Nastar Clinic is conceived to help recreational skiers shave seconds from the NASTAR times. The clinic will last for two hours and will be offered in the morning on NASTAR race days. The fee for one run through the course 6 will be included in the clinic price. The Park City Instructors will also benefit from some new procedures. All Instructors will be offered incentive pay for teaching 5-day group lessons, full-day group lessor and half-day group lessons. There will also be a rotation procedure that will keep all instructors rotating from the bottom-of-themountain stations (beginning student classes) to top-of-the-mountain stations (advanced student classes). We should also mention the many instructor activities and clinics scheduled for Park City this year. Two I.S.I.A. Clinics will be held here this year: First, the I.S.I.A. Night clinic to be held here on dates still to be specified by the I.S.I.A., and second, the Spring Clinic to be held April 27, 28, and 29. The P.S.I.A. Technical Committee meetings will be held January 8 through January 12. The P.S.I.A. National Academy will be held at Park City for the second year in a row from April 16 through April 26. And finally, what should be of great interest to anyone wishing to upgrade their certification status, a "PreCourse" certification will be held at Park Cit April 7 and 8. (Only 2 Pre-Course certifications are being offered this year in the 1. S. 1. A. Duane Vigos, Ski School Director "YES, I DO ... HOW DID YOU EVER GUESS?"
