Show accompanying my last Quarterly Report satisfactory, as I have spared no pains in making them according to the requirements of your Deaprt-ment, so far as made known to me, and according to my best Jedgement to facilitate the duties of your Office. Should there still be any deficiency, or want of form, a notification thereof will be cheerfully complied with. On the 18th inst. the celebrated Indian, Walker, one of the Utah Chiefs, began open and energetic hostilities upon the settlements in Utah, Juab, and San Pete Counties, killing one man, and wounding three, and jntiving off and killing cattle and horses. This occuring in the midst of our wheat Harvest, is causing us much inconvenience & loss, and we do not as yet know, what amount of loss of life and destruction of property will be included in the final result. We have thus far acted entirely on the defensive, using that conciliatory policy, that we still deem to be the best, hoping that hostilities will soon cease. I have the honor to be Most Respectfully Your Obt. Servt. Brigham Young Governor, & Ex=Officio Supt. of Indian Affairs for Utah Territory |
