This paper is a review of current and past literature about pragmatics and pragmatics instruction. The review includes a brief description of acquisition of pragmatics as well as the history of pragmatics. Details the lack of research in the field, the actions prompting more in- depth research on the subject, and what led to the current situation of pragmatics instruction. The review outlines current practices within the field of pragmatics instruction such as the use of role-play and study abroad programs, current research within the field of second language pragmatics and the overall state of and reception of pragmatics in schools today. Included are ideas for the future of pragmatics instruction based on past research and current technological advances in the field of generative AI and virtual socially immersive and interactive video game worlds; this includes the incorporation of these technologies to create engaging virtual environments for students to learn and practice pragmatics and discourse completion tasks that are adaptable and organic to help L2+ learners in understanding the concepts and principles of pragmatics in their target language |
