This thesis contains a suicide prevention and suicide survivor support program that will be available on the REACH4HOPE suicide prevention website created as part of this project. The written part of the project presents a brief overview of the numbers of suicides during the past four decades as documented by the Centers for Disease Control, a discussion of root causes of suicide, a brief survey of the history of suicide prevention efforts, and a discussion of the effectiveness of suicide prevention efforts. Most of the efforts in the early years of suicide prevention occurred in public school settings because of public concern about rising suicide rates. Federal government mandates required that prevention programs be put in place in public schools, but did not require that results of various approaches be documented. Parts of four approaches that are documented to prevent suicide when not used as standalone programs are combined into a community-wide suicide prevention approach recommended for the Washington County, Utah area. This evidence-based approach is available on line along with a comprehensive array of suicide prevention resources available in Washington County, Utah that have been compiled by the REACH4HOPE coalition. |
