Description This is the 1 hour, 45 minutes, and 41 seconds video of the Lasker Awards Ceremony and Banquet held in September, 2001. The Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research was given to Mario R. Capecchi, Oliver Smithies, and Martin Evans for their work in genetic research. Martin Evans discovered how to culture embryonic stem cells and Capecchi and Smithies independently, and using different methods, created knockout, or transgenic, mice. The Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research was awarded to Robert Edwards for his development of the process of in vitro fertilization. The Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service in Support of Medical Research and the Health Sciences was awarded to William Foege for his contribution in the eradication of smallpox and his commitment to helping eradicate other diseases such as river blindness.
