In my senior year at the University of Utah, I edited and improved upon the movel I wrote in the Honors Novel Writing Workshop course taught by Michael Gills. My novel If I Should Die Before I Wake is the story of a young woman named Emma meeting a young man named Cale by coincidence, and how they struggle through their individual trials while also growing stronger together. The two both go on journeys of self-discovery and exploration while also providing strength, support, and insight for the other. In this thesis I will delve into the intricacies of novel writing in general as well as my own personal experience in writing and becoming a novelist. I believe that truly exploring the methods and mental fortitude of working on a novel through multiple drafts is important to understanding much of myself and the humanities as a whole. The complexities of writing and experiencing through the eyes of characters and providing that experience for others is unique and extraordinary. |
