Description |
This flag is known as the "Arches Flag." The beehive is present as Utah is known as "the Beehive State." As a Deseret News article from 1881 explains: "The hive … is a significant representation of the industry, harmony, order and frugality of the people, and of the sweet results of their toil, union and intelligent cooperation." In other words, the beehive represents diverse peoples working together to "make the desert bloom" and make Utah a great place to live. The arch of stars above the beehive represent the 29 counties of Utah. Like the stones in an archway, each county upholds the "structure" of the state through their own unique contributions. If one stone is removed from an archway, it would likely collapse. Thus, the arch of stars illustrates how each county is depended on others for its own success and how working collectively, they create a strong and vibrant Utah. The three arches on the flag (the arch of stars, the shape of the beehive, and the opening of the beehive) allude to Utah's unique geographic features, with Utah hosting the densest concentration of natural arches in the world. These arches also allude to one of the most famous Utah symbols besides the beehive: Delicate Arch. The shape of an arch naturally beckons people to walk beneath it. For this reason, the arches also symbolizes an open gateway that welcomes the contributions of new inhabitants to Utah from other states and countries. Lastly, the orange/red color of the flag represent the red rocks of southern Utah, while the white represents the snow of northern Utah. This color scheme is unique among all US state flags, ensuring the new Utah flag will stand out among the rest. |
