The blue portion and the stripped section are reminiscent of the United States flag, and the single star represents Utah's place on that flag. There are 7 red stripes, representing the bravery of new Utahns in 1847. There are 6 white stripes representing completeness when Utah joined the union in 1896. The exact shades of the red and blue mimic Utah's original flag, as a motif to remembering our history and heritage. The white, grey, and orange areas form the shape of Utah when the flag is viewed sideways. The white represents the state's natural beauty, great snow, and the great salt lake to the north. The grey represents the iron rod from the Book of Mormon, and symbolizes the journey that the pioneers took to get here. The orange represents the famous red rocks to the south. The orange and grey next to each other represent the desert vanish that houses rock art, and symbolizes Utah's original inhabitants. The white and grey next to each other represent our mountains, and are a symbol of modern state pride.
