Description Simplicity is key to the redesign. The traditional beehive has too many ribs and is hard to hand draw. The hexagonal 3-block beehive is a strong candidate for a single "trademark" symbol characteristic of Utah which can compare to neighboring state flags. The 3-block beehive looks excellent as a stand alone decal. The three segments can easily be adapted to symbolize three virtues of the state's choice, for example, "unity, equality, industry." This augments the meaning a new flag as children (and adults) tie common virtues to the bold new symbol, consequently sews bold ties among themselves. The colors can be variable, but a two color design is best for logo type decals and engravings. Gold and black are symbolic of the bee and lend strength to the appearance. Black is not commonly used on state flags, so its use will increase the distinct look of the flag against its primarily blue neighboring state flags. However, black and gold may appear intimidating to some. Gold and navy blue have a similar effect, drawing heritage from the original flag. Either way, gold should be present as gold is present in the CO, AZ and NM flags. The star represents statehood as the 45th state. The star could also be a three block Sego Lilly, but that shape is ambiguous to many viewers. The star's primary purpose is to give balance to beehive, much like the SC flag's moon and palm. The diagonal slope is indicative of Utah's ski slopes. The diagonal division could also be removed and the three block beehive be centered on the flag, although this appears too much like the old design and fails to compete with neighboring state flags. I hope this design, or at least the 3-block beehive aspect of this design, lends strength to the mighty state of Utah, and reminds its residents that we ought to stand in UNION.
