The beehive, at the bottom left, represents industry, and has historical symbolism for both the pioneering spirit of the early settlers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but also the entrepreneurial spirit of the state as a whole and of all Utahns. The gull flying in the centre is the official state bird of Utah,and has enormous historical symbolism because of the historic 'Miracle of the Gulls', a symbol of the power of Providence in building the society of Utah. The gull's flight upwards represents progress, and shows Utah's development as a diverse state, steeped in its history both Native and pioneer, but also developing through progress and hard work towards a brighter future. The star in the upper right represents Utah's place, hard won after years of persecution, in the Union of the United States, and the allegiance of Utahns to the Constitution and its principles. The star's metaphorical place in the heavens above the gull also represents Providence for those who so believe in the Almighty as the lodestar of the state, but also more generally the higher aspirations of Utah towards the ideals of brotherhood, equality, and peace.
