This research project studied non-mandatory training attendance factors among educators in a K- 6 setting. It also studied if the emotions and feelings that the training attendees' had prior to attending a training affect their learning outcome. This research project was conducted in a K-6 public charter school where more than 90% of the educators are certified. The data collection methods used in this research project are one-on-one interviews, online survey, and observation. Six participants participated in the interview, 14 participants took an online survey and two nonmandatory trainings were observed for this research study. The data collection and analysis process revealed that, in this particular setting, the educators are more intrinsically motivated to attend non-mandatory trainings. Findings also indicated that training relevance, job/classroom performance, keeping up-to-date and networking are the main factors for educators to choose to attend non-mandatory trainings. However, salary raise and promotion were not strong motivating factors for the research participants to attend non-mandatory trainings. The participants also expressed that feelings and emotions that they feel prior to attending non-mandatory training affect their training participation and learning outcome. |
