Neighbors in a community are bound to more than just geography, but frequently share common values, experiences and stories. The social neighborhood is about how people choose to connect with one another in their neighborhood. This study focused on Rose Park, a suburb neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. Participants in the study included local officials, adults, and youth. The study used a combination of interviews and photovoice exercises to gather participant data about their neighborhood to answer the research questions: How does the increased use of online forms of communication (social media) shape the health, vitality and sense of place in neighborhood? How can neighbors in a shared geographic area (1/4 mile radius) interact most positively with one another? Data from participants was organized into three main themes of: neighborhood identity, sense of community and communication. The residents of Rose Park love their community and they desire to have more opportunities to engage with one another. The study also showed that for the residents in this community, social media platforms do not play a heavy role in development of relationships between neighbors. |
