As an image, this flag depicts the Great Salt Lake, which is one of the most well-known attractions in Utah, and one of the most famous landmarks which was said to have signaled the end of Brigham Young's journey. The yellow at the bottom symbolizes the lake at sunrise and sunset (one of the times the lake is at it's prettiest). Yellow also symbolizes hard work as it is the color of the beehive, and opportunity. The blue symbolizes the Utah sky and according to color theory, symbolizes honesty, trust, and responsibility, all of which embody Utahan's. Since about 30% of the population said they didn't want the flag to be redesigned, the blue is also a remnant of the original flag. It also matches the blue in the United States flag. On it's own, white symbolizes purity, protection, safety, and goodness. A lot of the Utah population is made up of Mormons, so the white embodies this population well. As part of the image, the white at the left symbolizes the mountains which are an unforgettable part of Utah. Utahan's are able to hike and enjoy the outdoors in the mountains. Many people like to ski in the winter, so the white symbolizes a mountain covered in slow. The white also in part shows the Great Salt Flats of the Great Salt Lake as it runs diagonally across the flag. The white star in the East symbolize Utah as being part of the United States, as Utah is one of the stars in the US flag. But since the Sun counts as a star, it also shows the Sun rising in the East, symbolizing a new day. By combining colors and symbols from the United States Flag, and original Utah flag, as well as including new symbols that describe Utah, I believe this flag embodies Utah's landscape and spirit in an unique way while still having traces of it's history. |
