Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of Salt Lake County: sub-county analysis

This paper is an examination of the shifting geographic distribution of the population within Salt Lake County over time as well as an analysis of the spatial distribution of its demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. It builds on the county-level analysis included in a separate section of this study, identifying geographic variation in selected county-wide averages. The first section reviews the growth and distribution of Salt Lake County's population among incorporated places as recorded in each decennial census of the twentieth century. Growth trends from 1990 to 2000 are identified at the census tract level and also in the six major regions of the county. The second section of the paper identifies and analyzes place1 and small area (tract) socioeconomics and demographics of the county using data from the 2000 census. Because this study has been sponsored by Salt Lake County Aging Services, detailed analyses of characteristics of persons 60 years and older are emphasized. The third section of this report presents the population projections for places and small areas in the county, with special consideration given to West Bench development of Kennecott Land.
