"The design only improves upon the commemorative design with horizontal tricolor design which is more recognizable and loved worldwide as the basis of many national flags. The colors and symbolism largely stayed the same, except now the 5 pointed star represents statehood and the 5 indigenous tribes of our state. The square instead of circular center design is to have it stand out from many circular designs of other state and national flags, and the square can represent the Golden Spike - how important the railroad is to the history of the State of Utah."
